Ed Sheeran wrote the song for himself.
One would assume that a song like Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” the biggest song of 2016, was written with Bieber in mind. As it turns out, that isn’t true at all, with songwriter-superstar Ed Sheeran revealing he wrote it originally for his own album. To make matters more interesting, if Bieber hadn’t taken it and given the song his own spin, it may have died in the water and never reached the public.
Here’s an excerpt about the song from Sheeran’s interview with Carson Daly:
“That was a song I had written for Divide. It just wouldn’t have made it … And then Justin took it and did his thing on it, and released it as a single and made it what it is. So going from a song that would have never been released to [being] the biggest song of last year — it just became Billboard’s #1 of 2016 of the whole year, and was nominated for Song of the Year at the GRAMMYs — it just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off.”
“Love Yourself” may have been the biggest song from Bieber’s blockbuster album Purpose, so we’re sure JBiebz ain’t mad about how things came to be.
